We sat down with the marketing manger at the Anvil Hotel, Erika Dahlby, to learn a bit more about what makes Anvil, and Jackson, truly unique.
Could you give us some background on the idea that sparked what is now Anvil Hotel?
There are places that you pass through and there are places that truly inspire. That was the case with Jackson and hotel owner Erik Warner, who spent summers as a kid working at area hotels.
Fast-forward a few decades, and his dream of owning a hotel in the American West’s most unique destination was exactly that – until a down and out motel in the heart of Jackson came on the block. And once the ink on the deal dried, he went to work assembling his team: the Brooklyn-based Studio Tack, a group of designers, who were charged with living a full year in Jackson before the first nail was hammered; a collection of craftspeople to create, from the millwork on the walls right down to the blankets on beds; a group of hoteliers who were ready to act as the ultimate hosts, welcoming new arrivals, outdoor enthusiasts, and locals alike. The result is a hotel with a soul, a retreat that was born of a place, not just dropped into it.
That sounds absolutely incredible – could you talk a bit about the process of the build and overall design?
The overall design of the public spaces + guestrooms reflects the rugged and timeless sensibility of Jackson’s terrain and the aesthetic culture of the Teton region and features a palate of rich wood, natural materials and raw brass fixtures throughout.
The renovation was done by Brooklyn based design firm Studio Tack who are behind many notable hotel projects.
Much more than a lobby, the front desk at the Anvil Hotel is a modern-day outpost, stocked with artisanal provisions and sundries not found elsewhere in Jackson.
The limited coffee program is rich and robust in flavor. If by some chance you forgot your gear or just need something new, you’ll find a carefully curated selection in our locally stocked Mercantile.
The rooms at the Anvil are simple but beautiful. They call to mind elegant and restrained composure – well-appointed but without unnecessary fanfare. The rooms are warm and decidedly handsome. A closer look reveals a creative balance of rich textures and details: two-toned walls covered in bead board, elegant window lace (unexpected but charmingly fitting), and simple metal bed frames blend modern and mountain rustic sensibilities. The beds are undeniably comfortable and feature quality high thread count cotton sheets, a warm down duvet, plush pillows and a custom Woolrich throw. In the bathrooms you’ll find high-end brass fixtures that have been washed over with a slight patina, an attention to detail rarely seen in motels. The minibar and fridge come fully stocked with carefully selected snacks and refreshments.
If you had to name two things that makes Anvil stand out against other hotels and locations – what would they be? (outside from the fact that the above description makes us want to move in tomorrow)
As part of the hotel guest experience, we offer a program of uniquely curated activities and programming year-round. On property we host nightly activities like whiskey tasting and woodburning, making s’mores in a cast iron and live music in the lobby. Some of our unique activities include wildlife tours, dog sledding, snowmobiling, and backcountry skiing.
Our location downtown is very convenient and is a short walking distance from the downtown’s shops, restaurants, art galleries, and spas. We are about a 20 minute drive to Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, minutes from the National Elk Refuge and other various seasonal recreational activities, and a little over an hour drive from Yellowstone. We view the hotel a perfect place for both the traveler that is looking for a more active outdoor experience, but also for the leisure traveler who’s interested in visiting for the food, culture, and a relaxing getaway.
Why did it make sense for you/Anvil Hotel to partner with Buckle?

And finally, the toughest question – what’s the best thing on the menu at Glorietta?
That’s a tough one, everything is amazing. We serve a wood-fire Italian menu, which changes seasonally, and focuses on fresh produce and features freshly made pastas and cast iron dishes that are meant to be shared to enhance a more welcoming family-style experience. But you can’t go wrong with the Ricotta Cavatelli and a Smoke Show – a strawberry-mezcal infused daquiri.
