a how to on making a kid-friendly may day basket

Step 1:  Decorate your paper!

step one - decorate your paper!

Maybe the most fun part.

We chose to doodle with a simple spring and summer theme. But feel free too have your own theme, whether it’s animal theme, your favorite sports team, or inspirational quotes. For the paper size, we used a 12×12 inch for a bigger cone, but you could cut a regular piece of printer paper into a 8×8 square for a smaller basket.

Step 2: Make your ‘basket’

Roll your paper into a cone and secure with tape.

Start by bringing two opposite corners together in the center and roll the bottom half more tightly while leaving the top half open. We used a sparkly tape, but feel free to used whatever you have on hand and, more importantly, whatever keeps your cone intact.

Step 3: Make your handle

Punch holes on the sides of the cone and thread your ribbon.

Secure your ribbon by tying a double knot on the inside of the cone so it doesn’t come out when hanging. You may need more knots, or you can secure the ribbon to itself. You can used whatever ribbon you have laying around the house. Or if you’re a planner, pick out one that goes with the theme of your cone!

Step 4: Add something sweet

Possibly the easiest part. Take your donut holes and poke them with the sticks or straws. Be careful to only go in half-way and not all the way through!

(Bonus tip: you can use premade cake pops, lollipops, suckers, or even candy bars.)

Step 5:  Add those May flowers

Arrange the silk flowers with the donut holes into the cone.

This might be best to do while having it hanging so you can see how it will look when you place it on the door later. If your cone is too deep, grab some tissue paper to fill the bottom of the cone and prop up your fillings.

Step 6: Visit a Friend

Hang on your friends door!

Ring the doorbell or knock, then run away don’t get caught!

We can’t wait to see how it turns out. If you made a May Day Basket following this guide, post a photo to Instagram and tag us with @BuckleYouth! We hope it’s the most fun. 🙂
