During the month of October, Buckle is shedding a light on awareness for Breast Cancer Prevention and Early Detection, and as part of our new partnership with the American Cancer Society®, we talked with ACS Community Development Manager, Sara McCarty, to learn more about the organization and their work towards a cancer-free world.

Sara, what is rewarding about your job at the American Cancer Society?
Making an impact and being a part of something that benefits my community. I’m so proud of what we have accomplished as an organization and that I could be a part of it. I would say the most rewarding part of my job thus far has been directly working with cancer survivors.

Who is the American Cancer Society and what is their mission?
The American Cancer Society is a nationwide community and volunteer-based health organization, dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem. The work we do as an organization doesn’t just focus on one area, but rather covers all cancers and all phases of the cancer journey.

Our mission is to save lives, celebrate lives, and lead the fight for a world without cancer.

What type of work is the American Cancer Society doing to support their mission?
American Cancer Society works to attack cancer from every angle. We promote healthy lifestyles and overall preventative care. We research cancer and its causes to find more answers and better treatments. We fight for lifesaving policy changes through our sister organization, American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, as well as offer a number of programs and services available to cancer patients and families.

Now available at Buckle: Breast Cancer Tees from brands like Fox, Hurley, Oakley, RVCA and more! 10% of the purchase price of each t-shirt sold will be contributed to the American Cancer Society®.

What opportunities are available to someone who wants to become involved with American Cancer Society?
There are many different ways to volunteer with ACS! Whether that’s driving cancer patients to and from treatments through the Road To Recovery program, helping at events like Making Strides Against Breast Cancer and Relay For Life, or volunteering your time and talents at a local office, the American Cancer Society is always looking for volunteers at any capacity – big or small.

Relay For Life is American Cancer Society’s signature event – tell us more.
With a presence in over 20 countries, each local fundraising event is an opportunity for communities to come together to recognize those who are currently battling cancer, to celebrate those who have won their battle with cancer, to remember those who have lost their battle with cancer, and to fight back against the disease.

Each Relay For Life event truly encompasses the American Cancer Society mission that no one should have to fight cancer alone.
